The flavour is… just amazing! Smultronstrå Still about smultron, one of the best things one can ever do is what we call a smultronstrå – take a grass and put as many smultron as you can find and eat it al at once. The only thing that can be comparable with that is if you find a good place with wild kantareller, but that we can talk about around autumn again. So, finding a place – ställe – that is loaded with smultron, you can understand is like finding a golden egg goose. Smultron can be translated as “wild strawberry” And they are so small, you can’t really feel like you found enough of them. To find them though can be a bit challenging, cause insects and animals love them just as much. Well, smultron is not a berry that you can easily harvest, but you can find wild in the Swedish skog (forrest). But the size is part of the charm, I would say. You just wish it would be as big as a strawberry. It has a really strong aroma and is sweeter. Its taste is approximately as a strawberry, just that it is even better. If I try to describe it, I would say it looks like a very small strawberry, like one you couldn’t even believe is for real – but it is. Google translates that as strawberry but the word for strawberry in Swedish is actually jordgubbe and smultron is really another berry. Ställe means place and smultron, well, that’s harder to translate. To get to know what it means you need first to understand its components. We can at least try.Īmongst all Swedish idioms, smultronställe must be my favourite. I can’t find a good translation to any other language but the meaning of this post is to help you understand and not feel lost if they ever appear somewhere in your life again (who knows, right?). The Swedish language is loaded with such words. It’s such a shame sometimes, and this is one of these times. In all languages, there are some idiomatic expressions and words that you just can’t translate with the same semantics as the original word. Others have also involved Ernie eating part of Bert's snack he prepares for himself, and when Bert comes back from somewhere, Ernie tries to make several attempts to cover up the crime in front of Bert, which is not successful mostly. Other sketches have involved Bert and Ernie sharing a snack by division, but finding that one of them has a bit more Ernie humorously decides to try to make it even by eating the extra piece, which goes forth until the entire snack is all eaten up. Ernie reveals in Sesame Street Episode 257 that his favourite activities include watching parades, circuses and going to birthday parties.Ī typical Bert and Ernie skit has Ernie coming up with a hare brained idea, and Bert trying to talk him out of it ending with Bert losing his temper, while Ernie becomes oblivious to his own bad idea. Bert was worried about the bad bits, but Ernie reassured him by saying "Bert, nothing bad is going to happen!". In The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, Ernie and Bert served as hosts, interrupting the movie whenever it looks like something bad is about to happen. However, after they lost Big Bird, Ernie blamed Bert. Ernie piloted the plane, and eventually, after they found Big Bird, he flew the plane upside-down, singing "Upside Down World". In Follow That Bird, he and Bert searched for Big Bird by plane. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1970.Įrnie has appeared in both of the Sesame Street movies. The song from that skit – titled "Rubber Duckie" – became a modest mainstream hit, reaching No. One regular segment that he hosted was "Ernie Says", a variation of "Simon Says".Įrnie sang about his affection for Rubber Duckie in a skit, which aired during the first season of Sesame Street. Ernie was one of the hosts of the show Play with Me Sesame. He has regularly appeared in skits with Grover, Cookie Monster, Sherlock Hemlock and Lefty the Salesman.įrom Season 33 (2002) until Season 36 (2005), he and Big Bird starred in a daily segment called "Journey to Ernie". Ernie makes appearances without Bert, usually within the framework of another double act. Other sketches have involved them sharing some food by dividing it equally, only for one of them to have a bit more than the other, leading Ernie to make it even by eating the extra piece. Ernie keeps irking Bert with the game until Bert joins - and usually, by the time Bert starts enjoying the game, Ernie is tired of playing the game and wants to do something else. Many Ernie and Bert sketches involve Ernie wanting to play a game with Bert, who would much rather do something else (like read). Ernie is also known for keeping Bert awake at night, for reasons such as wanting to play the drums, wanting to count something (like sheep), to observe something like a blackout, or even because he is waiting for his upstairs neighbor to drop his shoes. In addition, Ernie has no visible eyebrows, while Bert displays a unibrow.Įrnie is well known for his fondness for baths with his Rubber Duckie, and for trying to learn to play the saxophone. His appearance and clothing contrast noticeably with Bert, as he is the shorter and stouter of the pair, wears a shirt with horizontal stripes as opposed to Bert's vertical ones, and has a head that is wider than it is high. He and his roommate Bert form the comic duo Bert and Ernie, one of the program's centerpieces, with Ernie acting the role of the naïve troublemaker and Bert the world weary foil.Įrnie has a distinctive, chuckling laugh (a trait he shares with his baby cousin, Ernestine). I know what they’re doing and what they are not to a certain extent. It’s the fact that I know the situation of where we are and what we’ve overcome. If I think about it too much, I get deep into it. It’s one of those things I try to keep off my mind. I haven’t been talking to Gunna as much, but I talk to Thug often. LIL BABY: It honestly kind of (expletive) me up, like on a day-to-day. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Lil Baby opened up about decriminalizing rap lyrics, his friends Young Thug and Gunna who are currently locked up in a RICO criminal case and his third studio album “It’s Only Me,” which releases Friday. Earlier this year, he won a Grammy in the best melodic rap performance category for Kanye West’s “Hurricane,” which also featured The Weeknd. He’s worked with some of music’s best including Future, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. He won over listeners through his infectious singles like “Drip Too Hard,” “We Paid” and “Yes Indeed” with Drake. But once he made it a priority, he rose to remarkable success. Lil Baby, 27, initially wasn’t hard pressed to rap. I just knew if he transferred all that energy, he was going to grind all the way to the top.” He’s got that hustler’s mentality of the first one getting up and last one going to sleep. “All he had to do was transfer his energy from whatever he was doing to the music. “I knew Baby had a hustler’s spirit,” Thomas says. The more common approach, however, seems to be damnation by faint praise. Crossword bloggers, whose considerable vocabularies are easily weaponized, can be “unsparing”, in the words of the crossword constructor Anna Shechtman, a former assistant to Shortz whose high-meets-low crosswords for the New Yorker embrace pop culture and feminist intellectuals. People vent on online forums or post puzzle reviews on blogs. In the documentary Wordplay, Shortz reads some hostile correspondence: “This is both idiotic and completely unfair …” “You should be hanged by your cojones …” “Frogs hop, sir, but toads do not. He got 25 to 50 letters a week, mostly from the displeased. He quickly learned that you can’t please everyone. “The first couple of months were bumpy,” he says. Today, the section has a staff of five when Shortz started, it was just him. In 1993, after a successful run as the editor of Games magazine, Shortz became the Times’s crossword editor. He also did a law degree, but never took the bar, because he went immediately into a career in puzzles. In college, where he did a self-designed major, he earned the world’s first degree in enigmatology, the study of puzzles. At 16, he began contributing to puzzle magazines. By writing limericks, short stories and, on one occasion, the name for a new line of chewing gum, she won their family money, appliances and two cars.Īt 14, Shortz sold his first puzzle. His interest in wordplay and competition was influenced by his mother, a writer of children’s stories and articles with a knack for winning corporate writing prizes. Shortz, who was born in Indiana in 1952 and raised on a horse farm, has made puzzles since he was eight or nine. After editing, about half the clues in a typical puzzle are the author’s and half are Shortz’s. (The Times offers the industry’s highest rates – up to $750 for a weekday puzzle, and up to $2,250 for a Sunday – and authors are credited.) Every day Shortz and his colleagues choose submissions, factcheck and tweak them, then send them to test solvers. Ambitious journeymen seek apprenticeships with master puzzlers.Īt the Times and other publications, contributors submit crosswords, and are paid if theirs are chosen. Although countless people do crosswords, far fewer construct them. While Shortz shows me the first copy of the first edition of the first-ever published crossword book, his intern, Owen, a student at Princeton, shuffles around in the background. Forced to retreat from the library, Shortz uses a small adjacent room as his office. The shelves of his library, long full, are supplemented by towers of paper two and three stacks deep. Shortz’s aura is meticulous yet occasionally chaotic it is embodied in his charming, slightly cluttered house, which doubles as the home of what could be called the Shortz Collection: more than 25,000 puzzle books and magazines, including one from 1533, and various puzzle-related artifacts and trophies. And later, when I face him in table tennis, I feel like a mouse who has suddenly found himself getting a free ride in the talons of a hawk. Meeting Shortz on a recent Friday, I discover that Stewart has exaggerated, but only slightly: Shortz, 68, is of medium height and build, although, like Flynn, he has a moustache. Meeting him in person, I definitely thought, ‘Well, I was planning on taking your lunch money, but now I believe you could best me, in a physical joust, if you will.’ So I backed off immediately.” He’s the Errol Flynn of crossword-puzzling. In a 2006 documentary, Wordplay, the comedian Jon Stewart says: “When you imagine Crossword Guy” – Shortz – “you imagine he’s 13 to 14in tall, doesn’t care to go more than 5ft without his inhaler. In addition to editing the Times crossword, he does a weekly radio crossword on NPR, directs the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament and founded and owns the United States’s largest table tennis club. If it’s lonely at the top, Shortz doesn’t look it. Photograph: Ali Smith/Ali Smith for The Guardian Will Shortz collects crossword-themed antiques at his home in upstate New York. Neither group knew whether they were receiving curcumin or a placebo. We randomly allocated 60 participants (with mean age 69 years) to receive curcumin capsules (the intervention) or a matching placebo (a dummy). For full transparency, note the study was funded by a grant from the company that makes the extract – though it had no input into the design, interpretation or publication of the study. Our placebo-controlled, double-blind study examined the effects of 80mg of the lipid-conjugated curcumin in a cohort of healthy older people. The possible role of curcumin as the key ingredient is supported by numerous animal and test tube studies which show that the compound possesses a host of properties, including many relevant to brain function. While such findings need to be interpreted with caution, they suggest that some component of curry may contribute to the effect. One study of around 1,000 Singaporeans found that those who ate more curry had higher scores on a broad measure of cognitive ability. Indeed, there is converging evidence from both human population and animal studies that curcumin may help prevent age-related cognitive decline. Those that, like curcumin, decrease inflammation and oxidative stress may have longer-term benefits for the ageing brain. Unlike many pharmaceuticals, which are often aimed at single targets, these may affect multiple biological processes involved in cognitive decline and dementia.Ĭompounds that increase the activity of certain neurotransmitters (chemical signalling molecules) or the delivery of the basic energy substrates (glucose and oxygen) to the brain have the potential to improve aspects of cognitive function. Our lab is researching the cognitive and mood effects of a range of bioactive nutrients. This makes it up to 60 times more bioavailable. This means that the curcumin molecules are bound to lipids (molecules which make up cell membranes), allowing the curcumin to pass through tissue much more readily. The preparation used in the study above is lipid-conjugated. Various methods have been used to try to increase bioavailability. This means that, under normal circumstances, little is absorbed from the gut into the body. Second, native turmeric has low bioavailability. First, there is large variability in the levels of curcumin in commercial turmeric. While half a tablespoon or so of turmeric might contain 80mg of curcumin, gaining these health benefits is not as simple as ingesting this amount of the spice every day. These are implicated in a number of disease processes, including those observed in cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and dementia, among others. For example, one study in healthy middle-aged volunteers showed that taking 80mg of curcumin a day for four weeks reduced markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. There are already some promising results from studies of curcumin in healthy people. While any meaningful clinical effects are far from proven, at least the trials have a scientific foundation. In 1937, a paper in the Lancet medical journal described successful case studies using curcumin in the treatment of inflamed gall bladders.Īround 150 curcumin studies are under way to investigate the effects of curcumin (alone or in combination with other drugs) on cancer, heart disease, diabetes and dementia. The purported medical effects of curcumin have a long history, going back at least to the 18th century. It is one of more than 5,000 flavonoids, a group of plant-based compounds thought to contribute to the health benefits of fruit and vegetables. Curcumin is the component of turmeric ( Curcuma longa ) that gives the spice its bright yellow colour. Editors choice: Super Mario Advance 4 9.70 /10 2. On top of that the audio files are stored uncompressed at a low sampling rate on the already small cartridge storage space, uncompressing would rely on the 16mhz CPU which is already rather busy in the GBA. You might be able to convince an incredulous friend that you will attend the concert by showing them that you have already purchased a ticket if your friend knows that you tend to honor sunk costs, this will give them good reason to believe that you will attend the concert. Similarly, the tendency to honor sunk costs can be utilized to convince others that you will do something. If you know that you have a tendency to honor sunk costs, then you can, on Friday, increase the likelihood that on Saturday you will do what you think you should do by purchasing the ticket in advance. Suppose that on Friday you think that you should go to the concert on Saturday because it will be educational, but you anticipate that once Saturday afternoon rolls around you will have trouble mustering the motivation to get off the couch. The philosopher Robert Nozick has argued that it can be utilized to counteract the tendency to act against one’s considered judgment about what one should do. One reason for being suspicious is that the tendency to honor sunk costs can be leveraged in useful ways. However, several philosophers have argued that this orthodoxy is mistaken. To those who are unaware of those constraints, a rational action can look irrational.Īll this can perhaps be acknowledged by the defender of sunk cost orthodoxy. A rational actor must act within the constraints that apply to him. But individuals can’t always control their emotions, and families can’t always control their dynamics. True, the underlying dispositions may be irrational. Again, it might be all-things-considered best to go to Yosemite despite the smoke. Or suppose you know that skipping the vacation will cause family conflict to bubble up down the line. In this case, it might be perfectly rational for you to attend the concert in order to avoid this feeling. Suppose you know that if you choose not to go to the concert, you will inevitably feel bad about wasting money. Moreover, sometimes what looks from the outside like honoring sunk costs is really something else. Sometimes actors should attend to sunk costs because those costs constitute evidence bearing on the likelihood of future success.Ī firm that has invested extensive resources into a fruitless project would be foolish to ignore those investments when deliberating about whether to continue dedicating resources to the project, since the sunk costs may constitute good evidence that future investments will also be fruitless. But things are not quite as simple as they seem.įirst, the claim that “historical costs are irrelevant for present decision making” can easily be misunderstood. He compounds, rather than recoups, his losses. Someone who foregoes better outcomes simply because he has incurred costs that are irretrievably lost irrationally leaves goods on the table for nothing in return. So, the rational actor shouldn’t take them into account in deciding what to do. But sunk costs are by definition unrecoverable. This requires him to attend to the potential consequences of his actions. The rational actor aims to promote the best possible outcome. The underlying idea is something like the following. In everyday life, however, this implication of economic theory is frequently neglected thus forming another instance of irrational behavior. For example, the textbook Psychology in Economics and Business proclaims:Įconomic theory implies that historical costs are irrelevant for present decision making and only costs and benefits should be taken into account. That this tendency is irrational is often considered axiomatic and taught as such. Psychologists tell us that humans regularly honor sunk costs. The only other option is a staycation, which would be low-grade fun and relaxing.Ī family that decides to go on vacation simply because they have already invested resources into that vacation honors sunk costs. Yet the money you spent on booking can’t be recouped. You know that if you take the vacation as planned, you will be forced to stay indoors on account of the smoke and will experience virtually no fun or relaxation. Unfortunately, though, Yosemite is on fire. Your family has booked an expensive vacation to Yosemite with the intention of having a fun, relaxing vacation. This is an example of what’s often called the ‘sunk cost fallacy.’ Regardless of what you should do, many of us would go to the concert, in full knowledge that staying in would be time better spent, because we have already paid for the ticket. You already purchased a concert ticket for $400, which you can’t recoup. I think we can all agree that this would be reasonable. You realize that you would, on the whole, have a much better evening if you stayed home. You had planned to attend a concert, but you’re feeling tired. You are lazing on the couch, thinking about your evening. Ed Boon is a notorious tease when it comes to saying things in interviews and on social media, and in retrospect, it feels like he’s been talking about a Marvel NRS game for quite a while. DC really is the project that has the most evidence pointing to it right now. That is doubly true when considering that Marvel and DC are currently competing properties. Capcom if such a crossover game came to pass, but it would also be a pretty big leap for a whole new property in NetherRealm’s hands. It would feel like a successor of sorts to Marvel vs. DC." This provides a very interesting prospect for the next NRS fighter: it could be a Marvel game on its own, but it could just as easily be a crossover fighting game with the properties NetherRealm normally works with. In a 2019 interview with Game Informer, Ed Boon stated that NetherRealm “would love to make like a Marvel fighting game or a Marvel vs. We know this because NetherRealm producer Jonathan Anderson himself leaked this information. At any rate, evidence is mounting for this Marvel NetherRealm game, and it’s starting to look like there may be a lot more to it than that. NetherRealm boss Ed Boon is known for teasing ads, often quite obvious, so it’s not surprising if the company did something like this on purpose. Either way, we’ll probably find out what NetherRealm has in store sooner rather than later. Producer NetherRealm has envisioned the next game in the Mortal Kombat series, a sequel to a recent movie has been confirmed, and series creator Ed Boon will be honored by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.
